Consolidating Multi-Cloud Data Sprawl: Implementing an Enterprise Lakehouse on Microsoft Fabric
Consolidated multi-region database sprawl into a unified OneLake repository with sub-second DirectLake Power BI reporting.
A distributed enterprise with operations across multiple regional hubs was burdened by extreme data fragmentation. Core transactional data resided in isolated SQL instances, telemetry data in unindexed blob storage, and reporting relied on fragile, multi-layered SSIS pipelines. Executive financial reconciliation was delayed by up to 18 hours after day-end close.
MSA Infotech designed and executed a migration to Microsoft Fabric, consolidating disconnected storage endpoints into a single, SaaS-governed OneLake repository. Implementing a Medallion Delta Lake architecture combined with Power BI DirectLake mode reduced query latency from minutes to under 450 milliseconds, eliminated redundant data movement pipelines, and lowered total cloud storage and compute expenditure by 44%.
The client processes hundreds of thousands of ledger entries, transit logs, and warehouse inventory transactions daily. Over years of rapid growth, their data architecture evolved into a patchwork of disconnected systems:
Finance, logistics, and sales utilized different reporting databases. Producing consolidated quarterly reports required extracting CSVs into Excel, leading to version conflicts and conflicting numbers.
Nightly ETL batch runs regularly spilled into business hours, creating connection locks on production databases and degrading performance for operational staff.
The same relational records were replicated across raw staging environments, operational data stores, and staging caches, driving up storage licensing fees and complicating compliance under privacy regulations.
MSA Infotech established a zero-copy Medallion Lakehouse architecture built entirely within Microsoft Fabric:
Instead of moving massive raw datasets over slow egress pipelines, MSA Infotech configured OneLake Shortcuts to virtualize data from external cloud buckets without data duplication. High-frequency operational changes were streamed directly into the Bronze Lakehouse layer using Fabric Data Factory pipelines.
Using serverless Fabric Notebooks, raw JSON and tabular records were cleaned, deduplicated, and typed into ACID-compliant Delta Parquet format. Intermediate tables (Silver) were automatically organized around core business dimensions (Customers, Warehouses, Shipments, Invoices), eliminating relational database locks.
Traditional reporting required caching data into Power BI Import mode, which created data staleness. MSA Infotech structured the Gold semantic models using DirectLake mode, allowing Power BI to query Delta Parquet files in OneLake directly with the performance of in-memory caching - completely bypassing SQL compute engines and import schedules.
Security, compliance, and multi-tenant access control were incorporated into every layer of OneLake:
Configured Microsoft Purview within the Fabric tenant to automatically map column-level lineage from initial ingestion to end-user reporting.
Implemented dynamic security predicates in the Gold semantic model, ensuring regional branch managers can only access transaction ledgers belonging to their assigned territory.
All data at rest is protected with customer-managed keys (CMK) under Azure storage policies, fully adhering to financial data confidentiality standards.
Measurable business and technological benchmarks achieved following migration to Microsoft Fabric:
Complex multi-million-row financial queries dropped from an average of 42 seconds down to 450 milliseconds using DirectLake.
Financial close reporting accelerated from next-day compilation to live continuous reconciliation.
Decommissioning legacy dedicated data warehouse instances and redundant staging disks cut recurring infrastructure spend substantially.
